“IT’S CRIMINAL! THE COMEDY (Getting People Off and Other Legal Fantasies)” is my live one-man show, a  funny show about very serious things.  An idiosyncratic travelogue through the criminal justice system by a journeyman criminal defense attorney (that’s me, Murray Meyer, Esq.), I’d like to take you inside the Los Angeles criminal justice system and have you see what I see.  I’ll show you the courts, the jails, and the people I encounter daily in my mishegas job. I want you to see what it’s like for me, one ordinary Jewish bloke from Brooklyn trying to do good, make a living and be a mensch. I developed the material for the show at the Un-Cab Lab comedy workshop run by Un-Cabaret creators Beth Lapides & Greg Miller (www.uncabaret.com) Laurel Ollstein has been of enormous help in recent manifestations of the show. I perform it whenever and wherever I can.

COME SEE AND HEAR ME…

  • dealing with sexy DA’s trying to send my clients to prison for life
  • dealing with not very sexy DA’s trying to send my clients to prison for life
  • dealing with judges who hate me
  • dealing with judges who hate my clients
  • dealing with judges who hate me and hate my clients
  • dealing with juries who hate me
  • dealing with juries who hate me and hate my clients
  • dealing with my clients who hate me
  • dealing with my clients who I hate
  • dealing with my clients in jail
  • dealing with jailors in jail
  • dealing with clients who expect to be defended by the Dream Team.
  • struggling to figure out why so many of my clients confess to the cops so quickly
  • trying to remember to see the humanity in my clients
  • trying to live with my own inner demons
  • trying to figure out a defense where there is none
  • trying to pick a jury made up of people that don’t assume my guy is guilty before they sit down
  • trying to survive in a world of bullshit and violence
  • trying to keep from going crazy in a system that is inefficient, unfair, haphazard and still is better than the known alternatives
  • trying to believe that there are people who actually believe that bullshit about “presumption of innocence” and “fair trial”
  • trying to have a life that is not consumed by the craziness of my job
  • advising friends about getting off of jury duty
  • trying to use my legal skills in couples therapy
  • struggling to comply with attorney-client confidentiality
